You grab a bottle of ginger shot from the supermarket and think: great, something good for my health. But have you ever turned that bottle around?
Most ginger shots in the supermarket aren’t ginger shots at all. They’re apple juices with a hint of ginger.
What’s really in a supermarket shot?
Kassa (BNNVARA) looked into it: in all six supermarket shots tested, apple juice was the main ingredient — from 60% to 86%. At Lidl, the bottle contains just 8% ginger. At Albert Heijn, 25%. The rest is apple juice, lemon juice and sometimes water.
And despite the claim “no added sugars”, all that apple juice still adds 5 to 10 grams of sugar per shot. In a serving of pure ginger juice, the amount is negligible: just 0.01 grams.
The price doesn’t add up either
A 60ml supermarket shot costs €1.50 to €3.00. Enough for one, or at most two, drinks.
A 750ml bottle of pure, undiluted ginger juice gives you 50 to 70 servings — because a splash of 10-15ml is enough. Per serving, that works out at a fraction of the supermarket price. And you get pure ginger instead of 25%.
Three ways to get ginger juice
Pressing it yourself — Pure, but 20+ minutes of work, lots of mess, and it keeps for 2-3 days at most. Most people keep it up for about two weeks.
Supermarket shots — Convenient, but you pay a premium for diluted apple juice in plastic bottles.
Pure ginger juice (concentrated) — A splash in tea, sparkling water or a smoothie, done. No mess, keeps for weeks, dozens of servings per bottle. Do keep an eye on the price, though, because there are differences here too.
What should you look out for?
Five things to check when you buy ginger juice:
Price — Price per serving? Think of the difference between 60ml mixed and 750ml pure.
Ginger percentage — Supermarket shots: 8-25%. Pure juice: 99-100%.
Sugar per serving — Don’t look per 100ml (that’s misleading for concentrated products), look per serving.
Packaging — Glass or plastic? Glass is better for both the product and the environment.
Origin — Where does the ginger come from? Is it organic? Is the supply chain transparent?
What our customers say

Why we do things differently
We’ve been pressing ginger juice since 2016. Our juice contains two ingredients: ginger juice and a touch of lemon juice as an antioxidant. That’s it.
We manage the entire supply chain ourselves — from the organic farming in Peru to the bottling in the Netherlands. In glass bottles, not plastic.
And all of that at the best price on the market.
